Short answer
A high card limit may still be restricted by cardholder or account limits. Compare remaining capacity rather than nominal limits for the same period and currency. Capacity establishes neither sufficient balance nor approval: pending authorisations, other rules or provider checks may apply.
Key verification: The calculation uses period- and currency-compatible limits and usage without presenting capacity as an approved purchase.
Sources and limitationsA SaaS purchase fails and the user checks only the card’s displayed limit. Another layer may be consumed by team spending. This guide reviews capacity through a fictional example without changing limits, issuing cards or authorising payment.
Three documented layers
Wise describes Business account, cardholder and card limits, constrained by the lowest applicable layer. Check permissions, availability and daily/monthly settings; monthly capacity does not replace the daily check.
Fictional common-currency, common-period case
| Layer | Limit | Exercise usage | Remaining capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account | 1000 | 850 | 150 |
| Cardholder | 500 | 420 | 80 |
| Card | 300 | 240 | 60 |
The smallest remaining capacity is 60. A hypothetical purchase of 70 exceeds it despite the card’s nominal 300 limit. These are one currency’s units, not currency conversion. Avoid adding the three remaining amounts: they are overlapping constraints rather than separate funds.
Before increasing a limit
Review period, relevant usage, pending operations and purchase approver. Do not automatically attribute a decline to limits without provider evidence. Avoid raising the whole account for one card; record need and scope before an authorised change.
Closure and evidence
CallsIQ has not run this Wise case. Retain receipt and reconciliation after any authorised purchase; limits and proof of spending are different controls. A worksheet may suffice for planning when later reconciled against actual data and current terms.
