Choose a Google Business Profile primary category for several services

Content updated:

Scope: Documentation-based guide reviewed on 7 October 2026. Exercises and protocols are original proposals, not product tests performed by CallsIQ.

Short answer

Choose an available specific category representing the actual main activity. Add categories for relevant additional activities without turning every product or keyword into a category. You cannot create your own category or guarantee positions by changing it. Keep evidence and business approval.

Key verification: Check the category in the profile catalogue and its match to business activity, website and details before saving.

Sources and limitations

A business repairs equipment, sells accessories and advises companies. Selecting every vaguely related category does not make its description more precise. Represent what the business is, then its relevant additional activities, using the catalogue Google provides for that profile.

Documented rules and scope

Google’s category guidance says to choose a specific listed category; you cannot create a new one. If the exact category is unavailable, choose a general one describing the activity. Additional categories should not become a list of every product or service.

Also check the business representation guidelines. Category changes do not make an ineligible activity eligible. Separate departments or businesses require checking actual conditions; do not create duplicate profiles simply to occupy different categories.

Repair and accessories example

Fictional case: a workshop mainly receives customers for computer repairs and sells accessories as an additional activity. Its owner finds an available catalogue category corresponding to the workshop, rather than inventing a commercial label containing the city and services. If retail is also a relevant activity, consider an existing additional category describing it.

We do not present an exact label as available in every language or country: inspect the real profile’s options. Nor should one month’s revenue decide the category when it does not represent business identity. Ask the owner to describe normal activity and document why the candidate fits.

Controlled change and follow-up

Save previous category, candidate, reason, date and approval. Change only what is required and check profile status: Google may review changes and request verification. Do not judge success solely from a search on your computer; location and context affect results. Keep services and public details consistent.

What to ask an agency such as Brandify

Brandify presents local visibility services. If buying assistance, request a category proposal, rationale, permissions and change register. This guide does not establish a specific category-management module or rankings achieved by Brandify. An owner can review one profile using official guidance; for many locations, require location-level traceability.
