Short answer
A Google Ads click and a GA4 session represent different events. Align campaigns, dates, time zone and acquisition dimensions, then inspect page loading, tags, consent and parameters. An aggregate difference alone does not establish lost visitors or leads.
Key verification: Trace an authorised visit without generating paid advertising clicks and record which signals reach each system.
Sources and limitationsIf Ads reports 120 clicks and GA4 reports 90 paid traffic sessions, you have not established that 30 customers were lost. The ratio 90/120 compares two counts; it is not a person delivery rate. Use this guide to distinguish technical collection problems from poorly defined comparisons.
What each system counts
Ads counts clicks on advertisements. GA4 groups interactions into sessions; several clicks can fall within an existing session. Google documents these click and session differences. Also consult the current GA4 session definition: inactivity and configuration matter. Closing a tab is not sufficient evidence that a new session began.
Diagnostic matrix
| Situation | Possible explanation | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Several nearby clicks | One active session | Review intervals rather than require equality |
| Page fails to finish loading | Expected tag is not observed | Response, loading and events in an authorised test |
| First-user session grouping | Dimension differs from session campaign | Compare session acquisition scope |
| Consent choice or blocking | Different observation between systems | Respect the choice and document implementation |
Before investigating, save exports using the same reporting window, campaigns, account, property and time zone. Separate networks or interaction types that do not lead to your website. Record filters, observed or modelled data and export time. Provisional figures can change after processing.
An example that cannot establish loss
Fictional example: one person makes two clicks while a session remains active; another makes a click whose destination fails to load completely. Advertising could count three clicks while your collection observes one session. The difference mixes repetition and missing observation. You cannot allocate the real 120 versus 90 discrepancy to these causes without additional evidence.
Test and acceptance record
Open your own test page directly with test UTM parameters. Check its final destination, parameter preservation, measurement permission and expected events using authorised tools. Do not click paid ads to manufacture tests or invent a valid GCLID. A UTM test verifies that path but does not reproduce every condition of a real Ads click.
Record initial and final URL, time, browser, consent choice, observed event and expected result. If parameters disappear, fix that specific redirect and repeat. If dimensions are mixed, correct the report before changing the website. There is no universally acceptable discrepancy percentage for every implementation.
Where WhatConverts fits
WhatConverts documents lead capture and attribution. Recorded enquiries by channel can complement an investigation; the product does not turn clicks into sessions or guarantee recovery of every unobserved visit. Evaluate it when you need calls, forms and commercial source together. For a reporting discrepancy alone, start with the exports and protocol above.
