Name does not match IBAN: interpret payee verification

Content updated:

Scope: Documentation reviewed on 13 October 2026. Examples are fictional and tests are proposed; CallsIQ has not performed product tests.

Short answer

Name checking helps reconcile payee and IBAN rather than validating invoices or bank-detail changes. Separate match, close match, mismatch and unavailable checks. Resolve discrepancies through a known channel before authorisation: unavailable does not mean matching.

Key verification: The record retains result, discrepancy and independent confirmation evidence before approving payment.

Sources and limitations

A supplier sends new bank details and the system shows a similar name. Continuing merely because the amount is small does not resolve identity. This guide proposes a fictional-data review record without authorising a transfer or guaranteeing recovery of misdirected money.

Documented Wise scope

Wise explains Verification of Payee for eligible EUR/IBAN recipients and four outcomes. Check current app and payment route; availability for every currency or country is not claimed. Saved recipients still need current-detail review.

Decision record without published bank details

Name does not match IBAN: interpret payee verification: table 1
OutcomeReview
MatchInvoice, amount and authorisation still need checking
Close matchName and holder confirmed through known channel
No matchPause approval and clarify details
UnavailableDo not assume confirmed identity

Fictional example: invoice branding differs from the account name. A legitimate explanation may exist, but the payer should not invent it. Confirm with the usual contact through a previously known channel rather than only the new phone number in the same change email.

Separate verification and approval

Record result, date and who confirmed the discrepancy. Bank verification and purchase approval are different controls: a matching name can still accompany an unapproved invoice. Retain evidence without publishing IBANs, personal names or financial-system screenshots.

Accept the record

CallsIQ has not executed this Wise transaction. An authorisation worksheet may suffice for few payments; the service adds a check where available. Keep the case pending while identity or authorisation remains unresolved even if the interface allows continuation.
