Mobile vs desktop: compare conversion rather than volume

Content updated:

Scope: Documentation reviewed on 9 October 2026. Examples are fictional and tests are proposed; CallsIQ has not performed product tests.

Short answer

More mobile leads do not establish better conversion: divide eligible leads by comparable sessions and review qualification. Retain window, channel and device rule. Someone switching devices may appear in several segments; their sum is not automatically unique people.

Key verification: Rates reproduce from compatible numerators and bases, separating acquisition device from the device used at closure.

Sources and limitations

A campaign brings many phone-device leads, while staff recall better desktop conversations. Both impressions can be true: volume and quality answer different questions. This guide constructs a fictional comparison to identify which stage needs investigation before changing budgets or design.

Choose a reconstructible unit

In this exercise, a lead is a valid initial enquiry linked to an eligible session under a stated deduplication rule. Do not mix repeat calls with new people or all site sessions with one campaign’s leads. Report unknown devices separately and use the same qualification window for both groups.

Worked case: higher volume, lower qualification

Qualification per lead25%50%

Mobile produces 40 leads versus 12, but converts fewer sessions and qualifies a smaller proportion. Qualified acquisition per session is 1% on mobile and 3% on desktop. This describes the sample rather than a universal device advantage: offer, timing, source or measurement failures may differ. Observed percentages do not prove statistical improvement.

Documented WhatConverts reporting

WhatConverts documents Device Usage with leads and quotable leads. Check filters and plan, distinguishing advertising metrics from sessions supplied elsewhere. A worksheet suffices to rehearse the comparison; CallsIQ has neither run this account report nor observed the table’s results.

Acceptance before intervention

Rehearse an authorised enquiry from each device and check form, phone and attribution. Review unqualified leads and incomplete bases. With coherent measurement, formulate a specific hypothesis and design its evaluation rather than attributing every effect to the screen. Retain the original series and document changes for later comparison under the same rules.
