Short answer
An eSIM provisions a carrier subscription on a compatible device. A virtual number manages a line through a telephony service and its destinations. They can complement each other: the eSIM provides mobile data and a VoIP app uses that connection. Verify voice, SMS and coverage for the specific plan.
Key verification: Test incoming calls, callbacks and messaging with the chosen plan and device, including a second person if the line must be shared.
Sources and limitationsYou want a public business phone without exposing your personal mobile. Two offers may appear to solve it: a second mobile line through an eSIM, and a virtual line through an app. Decide who answers, where connectivity is available and which functions are needed; the SIM’s digital format does not determine those conditions.
Connectivity and numbering are different layers
The GSMA explains eSIM as digital SIM provisioning in a secure element. You need device compatibility and carrier coverage. A travel plan may provide data only: do not assume it includes mobile calls or a number usable for incoming messages.
CallHippo describes business virtual numbers and apps for handling calls. The particular route may use the internet or forwarding to other destinations. Confirm each route’s charges and requirements: cloud numbering does not create mobile coverage when a device lacks connectivity.
Requirements before buying
| Need | eSIM with mobile plan | Virtual number service |
|---|---|---|
| Data away from Wi-Fi | Depends on coverage and plan | The app requires connectivity |
| Several agents on one line | Not supplied by the eSIM format | Check users, routing and licences |
| SMS and access codes | Check plan voice/SMS support | Check destination and acceptance; not guaranteed |
| Business ownership of the number | Ownership according to contract | Ownership and exit according to contract |
Example: an agency working while travelling
Fictional case: one person travels while another answers from the office. A data eSIM connects the traveller wherever coverage is available. The business number stays in a shared service routing calls to both apps. Buying only the eSIM does not add this routing; buying only the phone system does not ensure the traveller’s connectivity.
If you work alone and only need two lines on one phone, first compare a second mobile subscription compatible with your device. For schedules, agent distribution and continuity when staff change, evaluate shared telephony. Do not assume Spanish numbers are available without confirming documentation, stock, portability and supported services.
Test the selected combination
On your own authorised line, check an incoming call, callback with the correct caller identity and incoming messaging if contracted. Repeat on Wi-Fi and mobile data. For a shared line, verify what the second person sees while the first is answering and how a missed call is recorded.
Do not use a real banking access code to test SMS reception. Ask about compatibility and use permitted messages without putting an account at risk. Record results by device and route. CallHippo is relevant when business call distribution is the problem to solve; the eSIM may remain part of connectivity.
